At just 23, Tondani Nevhungoni shakes up Makhado politics as EFF takes an ANC seat in Limpopo
The name Tondani Nevhungoni is attracting attention following her reported electoral performance in Makhado, Limpopo, where the 23-year-old has become a talking point in discussions about young leadership and political participation.
What makes her story particularly interesting is her age. When the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) was established in 2013, Tondani was only 10 years old. Today, she serves as the EFF Coordinator in Makhado and has been associated with an electoral performance that has drawn attention from supporters of the party.
According to figures shared by EFF supporters, Tondani secured 3,781 votes across the ward and proportional representation (PR) ballots, with the party reportedly gaining a seat previously held by the African National Congress (ANC).
The development has been celebrated by EFF supporters, who see it as an example of what young people can achieve when they are given opportunities to participate in political leadership.
Her supporters have also drawn comparisons between her performance and that of established ANC structures in the Vhembe region. They argue that her political journey demonstrates that age does not necessarily determine someone’s ability to organise, mobilise supporters and participate meaningfully in elections.
One of the messages emerging from the discussion is that political organisations should create opportunities for younger members instead of limiting leadership opportunities to older and more experienced individuals.
For the EFF, Tondani’s story has become an opportunity to highlight its approach to developing young leaders and giving them responsibilities within party structures.
However, the wider Makhado election results also provide important context. The ANC retained control of the municipality, securing 53 of the 75 council seats, while the EFF secured five seats in the overall council allocation. These figures show that although the EFF made gains, the ANC maintained its municipal majority. The People’s Register
Nevertheless, Tondani’s reported achievement has generated conversation about youth participation and the importance of giving emerging leaders a platform.
At just 23, she is already occupying a significant organisational position within her party. Her story raises an important question: how many other young people could make meaningful contributions if political organisations gave them similar opportunities?
For now, her name is receiving attention in Makhado, and her supporters are celebrating what they consider an important moment for young leadership in Limpopo.
