Asiedu Nketiah Assumes Leadership of African Political Parties Initiative

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has been elected the inaugural Chair of the African Political Parties Initiative (APPI), giving him a leadership role in a new continental platform aimed at strengthening political institutions and promoting democratic governance across Africa.

His election took place at the African Political Parties Summit 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

Asiedu Nketiah was unanimously approved for the position following his nomination by an interim committee established by the initiative. The inaugural leadership of the APPI Bureau was also endorsed for a three-year term.

The initiative seeks to strengthen political parties as institutions, encourage cooperation among political organisations and contribute to Africa’s political and economic transformation.

In his remarks following his election, Asiedu Nketiah urged political parties across the continent to look beyond their immediate ambition of winning elections and focus on developing the institutional capacity required to govern effectively.

He argued that political parties should not be judged solely by their electoral victories but also by their ability to prepare competent leaders, develop policies and build structures capable of delivering meaningful national development.

According to him, political organisations must invest in systems that prepare individuals for public office long before they assume leadership responsibilities.

He stressed the importance of establishing party schools, policy institutes, research centres and other structures that would improve the quality of political leadership and preserve institutional knowledge.

Asiedu Nketiah also identified the proposed APPI Agenda 2040 as a major priority for the organisation, describing it as an important framework for preparing African political institutions for future challenges.

He called for stronger collaboration among political parties, saying the continent needed organisations capable of developing long-term solutions to its governance, economic and social challenges.

The NDC chairman further highlighted the importance of giving women and young people more meaningful roles in political decision-making.

He argued that their participation should extend beyond election campaigns and political mobilisation to include policy formulation, resource allocation and leadership responsibilities.

Asiedu Nketiah maintained that women and young people must be involved in shaping the policies that determine the future of their countries rather than being treated mainly as supporters during electoral contests.

He also encouraged African political parties to strengthen their engagement with political institutions outside the continent.

He noted that Africa had accumulated valuable experience through liberation movements, democratic transitions, constitutional development and conflict resolution, which could contribute to broader international discussions about governance.

The APPI is being developed as a platform for political parties to exchange ideas, improve institutional capacity and promote cooperation on issues affecting the continent.

Its establishment reflects growing calls for African political organisations to become more effective institutions capable of supporting democratic stability and sustainable development.

Asiedu Nketiah’s election is also significant for Ghana, as it places the chairman of the country’s governing NDC in a prominent position within a continental political initiative.

His three-year leadership will come at a time when discussions about democratic governance, political accountability, youth participation and institutional development remain important across Africa.

The new chair is expected to help guide the initiative’s work towards building stronger political parties and encouraging a more structured approach to leadership preparation and governance across the continent.
