Asaba: Chaos Erupts as Obi-Kwankwaso Campaign Rally Comes Under Heavy Attack

According to a report by The Vanguard on Saturday, November 7, 2026, political tension in Delta State reached a boiling point on Saturday after a peaceful one-million-man march organized in support of Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was violently disrupted in Asaba.

The chaotic clash left several participants injured and multiple campaign vehicles vandalized.

The incident, which follows a similar disruption of the movement’s rally in Effurun, has sparked a fierce war of words between opposition leaders and the ruling party over who masterminded the violence.

According to eyewitnesses, the rally—which aimed to garner grassroots support for the Obi-Kwankwaso political family and Victor Ochei, the NDC candidate for Delta North Senatorial District—turned into a nightmare when suspected hoodlums armed with machetes, clubs, and knives descended on the crowd.

Favour Emerue, the Delta State Coordinator of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, disclosed that over 30 campaign buses bearing images of the candidates were smashed during the onslaught.

Several peaceful marchers sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

Expressing deep frustration, Emerue noted that the organizers had duly informed security agencies and even complied with the Commissioner of Police’s directive to avoid assembling at the Inter-Bua Junction.

However, he raised concerns over the sudden disappearance of police personnel when the attackers struck, warning that the state government would be held accountable if lives are lost to political thuggery.

Reacting swiftly to the violence, former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and NDC senatorial hopeful, Victor Ochei, strongly condemned the attack.

He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of resorting to intimidation and violent suppression instead of engaging in healthy, issue-based political competition.

Ochei alleged that the onslaught was spearheaded by commercial tricycle operators supervised by a local task force official, and called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to immediately launch an independent investigation to bring the perpetrators to book.

In a sharp counter-response, Delta APC spokesman, Valentine Onojeghuo, dismissed the accusations as “baseless and lacking proof.” Onojeghuo claimed that the opposition party was merely trying to deflect attention from its internal fractures and leadership crises.

Reiterating Governor Oborevwori’s stance, the APC spokesman maintained that the ruling party remains strictly committed to peaceful, issue-based campaigns free from violence, advising the NDC to resolve its internal discord rather than pointing fingers.
