Ampem Darkoa knocked out of CAF Women’s Champions League after defeat by AS FAR
Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies have been eliminated from the CAF Women’s Champions League following a 2-0 defeat by defending champions AS FAR on Sunday.
The defeat ended Ampem Darkoa’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 2023, with the Ghanaian side missing out on qualification on head-to-head rules.
Charles Anokye Frimpong’s side went into the decisive Group B encounter needing just a point to secure a place in the last four.
Frimpong made one change to his starting line-up, handing Asana Hamidu a starting role ahead of Victoria Banful.
Ampem Darkoa spent much of the first half on the defensive but showed resilience to keep the Moroccan champions at bay.
Goalkeeper Rose Teye Baah was particularly impressive, producing a crucial penalty save in stoppage time to ensure the teams went into the break level at 0-0.
However, the Ghanaian side’s resistance was broken shortly after the restart when Baah was sent off for a reckless challenge inside the penalty area, giving AS FAR another opportunity from the spot.
Ghizlane Chebbak made no mistake from 12 yards to put the defending champions ahead.
Ampem Darkoa responded by committing more players forward in search of an equaliser, but Rebecca Assemani failed to capitalise on a promising opportunity to restore parity.
AS FAR eventually sealed the victory in the closing stages, taking advantage of a defensive error to score their second goal and condemn the Ghanaian champions to elimination.
The result sees AS FAR advance to the semi-finals alongside Group B debutants Kawempe Muslim Ladies, while Ampem Darkoa’s campaign ends at the group stage.
