Africa World Airlines Breaks Silence On Viral Aircraft Incident At Kumasi Airport
Africa World Airlines (AWA) has rejected social media reports claiming that one of its aircraft developed a technical problem and passengers were evacuated at Kumasi Airport.
The airline described the circulating accounts as false, explaining that the aircraft was carrying out a scheduled demonstration flight rather than operating a passenger service.
In a clarification, AWA identified the aircraft as an Embraer E190 and said the flight was part of the demonstration exercises required by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
The airline stressed that the aircraft did not have passengers on board during the exercise. Instead, those inside were members of the crew and inspectors from the aviation regulator who were participating in the required assessment.
AWA also directly dismissed claims that an evacuation had taken place, insisting that there were no passengers to evacuate.
The clarification seeks to address reports that had circulated online, creating the impression that an aircraft belonging to the airline had experienced an emergency situation at the Kumasi airport.
By explaining the purpose of the flight and identifying the people on board, the airline said the incident had been misrepresented on social media.
Demonstration flights required by aviation authorities form part of regulatory processes involving aircraft operations. In this case, AWA said the Embraer E190 was undertaking the exercise required by the GCAA.
The airline’s statement therefore distinguishes the regulatory demonstration flight from an ordinary commercial journey, during which passengers would normally be on board.
The clarification is expected to correct the impression created by the online reports and reassure members of the public who may have encountered claims of an aircraft emergency at Kumasi Airport.
AWA maintained that the reports of a technical problem and passenger evacuation were untrue.
