17-Year-Old Kenyan Makes History at Dakar Youth Olympic Games Despite Tough Triathlon Debut

Seventeen-year-old Robert Robin Richard has made history by becoming the first Kenyan athlete to represent the country in triathlon at the Youth Olympic Games.

Richard competed in the men’s triathlon at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal on November 5. He completed the demanding race in one hour, nine minutes and 14 seconds.

The competition involved three disciplines: a 750-metre swim, a 20-kilometre cycling race and a five-kilometre run.

His debut was not easy. According to reports by Citizen Digital and The Standard, Richard experienced stomach cramps during the swimming stage and muscle cramps during the run. He also received two time penalties.

Despite the setbacks, he completed the race and finished 28th in the official results published by World Triathlon.

Portugal’s Artur Gaspar won the men’s event in 53 minutes and 13 seconds. Luxembourg’s Emile Vanolst finished second, while Japan’s Daiki Nishizaki and Kazakhstan’s Ramazan Ainegov shared third place.

Richard’s participation is an important milestone for Kenyan sport because triathlon combines swimming, cycling and running, requiring athletes to develop skills across all three disciplines.

Team manager Elias Njuguna described the experience as an important achievement, despite the result not meeting the team’s expectations. He also identified swimming as an area that needs greater attention if Kenya hopes to become more competitive in the sport.

The appearance in Dakar gives Kenya valuable international exposure in a discipline that has received less attention than athletics and rugby.

For Richard, the experience offers an opportunity to learn from international competition and build towards future events.
