Zothwane Dismisses Pirates Hoodoo Talk After Fourth Defeat

Sekhukhune United head coach Papi Zothwane has dismissed suggestions that his team is struggling with an Orlando Pirates ‘hoodoo’ after suffering another defeat against the Soweto giants.

Sekhukhune have now lost four times to Pirates this season, a record that has raised questions about their ability to overcome the Buccaneers whenever the two sides meet.

Their latest encounter ended in disappointment for Zothwane’s team, with Pirates securing a narrow 1-0 victory to eliminate Sekhukhune from the Carling Knockout competition and book their place in the semi-finals.

The repeated defeats have fuelled discussions among supporters about whether Pirates have developed a psychological advantage over Sekhukhune. However, Zothwane is not convinced that the situation should be described as a hoodoo.

The coach’s response suggests that he prefers to view the results as part of football rather than attach any unusual explanation to his team’s difficulties against the Soweto club.

Although losing four matches against the same opponent in one season is a difficult record to ignore, Zothwane’s position indicates that he is not interested in allowing the narrative to become a distraction for his players.

For Sekhukhune, the immediate priority will be to learn from the latest setback and redirect their attention towards their remaining fixtures.

The defeat also ended their hopes of progressing further in the Carling Knockout, while Pirates continued their defence of the trophy.

Zothwane will now have to work on ensuring his team responds positively after another disappointing result against the Buccaneers.

Meanwhile, Pirates will take confidence from extending their winning record against Sekhukhune and reaching the competition’s semi-final stage.
