“You Think You Have An Advantage?” — Coach Pitso Explodes In Sudden, Cold Warning To Benni
Pitso Mosimane Sends Strong Message To Benni McCarthy Ahead Of Bafana-Kenya ShowdownBafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has played down the potential advantage Benni McCarthy could have from knowing South Africa’s players and tactical approach ahead of their highly anticipated 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Kenya.
The two South African football figures will go head-to-head in a fascinating international battle this month, with Mosimane leading Bafana and McCarthy in charge of the Harambee Stars. The first encounter is scheduled for 13 November at Orlando Amstel Arena, before the teams meet again in Nairobi on 17 November.
The fixture has attracted significant attention because of the history between the two coaches. Mosimane previously worked with McCarthy during his first spell with Bafana, while the pair have also crossed paths as coaches at club level.
Despite that familiarity, Mosimane insists there is no major tactical advantage simply because he understands McCarthy’s football philosophy.
“Doesn’t mean when I know how Benni plays, it means now I have an advantage. No, it just gives me a little bit of data and understanding of seeing patterns, what is most likely to come,” Mosimane said.
The experienced coach used some of the biggest clubs in world football to explain his thinking. According to Mosimane, modern football has become so heavily analysed that coaches rarely have complete tactical surprises available to them.
He pointed to Orlando Pirates as an example, arguing that opponents may study the Buccaneers extensively before matches but can still struggle when they actually arrive at Orlando Amstel Arena.
The message is clear: knowing what an opponent usually does is one thing, but stopping it on the pitch is another.
That philosophy could become particularly important for Bafana during the November international window. South Africa currently sit at the top of Group D after winning their opening two qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea, giving Mosimane’s side a strong foundation in the race for qualification.
Mosimane has also named a strong 27-man squad for the double-header. Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Lyle Foster return to the setup, while Mamelodi Sundowns youngster Siyanda Ndlovu has earned a notable call-up after an impressive run of form.
The selection also includes several established internationals, with Sundowns supplying a large portion of the squad.
For McCarthy, however, the challenge will be different. Kenya have already secured automatic qualification for the 2027 AFCON as co-hosts, but the former Bafana striker has made it clear that his team will not simply travel to South Africa to participate. He wants the Harambee Stars to compete and produce positive results.
That sets the stage for an intriguing tactical contest between two coaches who know each other extremely well.
Mosimane may understand McCarthy. McCarthy may understand Mosimane. But when the whistle blows, the outcome will ultimately be decided by execution, discipline, adaptability and the players on the pitch.
