‘We Don’t Like Mahama Anymore’ – Dome Market Woman Rejects Calls for President’s Third Term

A market woman at Dome in the Greater Accra Region has rejected calls for President John Dramani Mahama to pursue a third term in office, citing worsening business conditions and financial difficulties among traders.

The trader argued that market women were struggling to sustain their businesses under the current administration, making the prospect of Mahama seeking another term unacceptable to them.

Speaking in an interview, she acknowledged that Ghanaians experienced significant economic difficulties during the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

However, she maintained that despite the high cost of living at the time, consumers still had the financial capacity to purchase goods.

She contrasted that situation with current market conditions, claiming that although the government has reported reductions in the prices of some commodities, traders are struggling to attract customers because many people cannot afford basic necessities.

The woman further disclosed that traders often borrow money to purchase goods for resale but struggle to recover their investments due to poor sales, leaving some indebted to their creditors.

“When Akufo-Addo was in power, we complained that things were hard, but people were still buying. Now, they say things have become cheaper, but people are not buying anything. We borrow money to purchase goods for sale, yet we still end up owing people. We therefore don’t like Mahama’s administration,” she said.

To illustrate the challenges facing traders, she pointed to plantains displayed at the market, explaining that some were deteriorating because of a lack of customers and limited patronage.

She maintained that the situation had placed considerable financial pressure on market women, threatening their businesses and livelihoods.
