Vice President Joins Oye Bampoe Addo’s Family to Mourn Late Brother at State House Funeral
The State House forecourt in Accra became a gathering point of sorrow and solidarity on Saturday as Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang arrived to join family, friends and sympathisers at the funeral of the brother of Deputy Chief of Staff, Oye Bampoe Addo.
The Vice President’s presence lent significant weight to the solemn occasion, underscoring the close ties between the presidency and the office of the Deputy Chief of Staff. Dressed in traditional mourning attire, she was received by senior government officials and members of the bereaved family before taking her seat among the dignitaries.
The forecourt, ordinarily a venue for state ceremonies and official receptions, was transformed into a space of collective grief, with mourners filing in from early morning to pay their last respects. Clergy members led prayers and tributes, while family representatives recounted fond memories of the deceased, describing him as a devoted brother and a unifying figure within the household.
In attendance were ministers of state, members of the Council of State, parliamentarians from both sides of the political divide, as well as traditional rulers and representatives of various institutions. The gathering demonstrated how bereavement can momentarily set aside political differences, as figures who frequently clash in public discourse stood side by side in quiet reflection.
Oye Bampoe Addo, visibly moved by the outpouring of support, received condolences from the Vice President, who conveyed sympathies on behalf of the presidency and the government. She encouraged the family to take comfort in the legacy left behind by the deceased and to remain united in the difficult days ahead.
Sympathisers described the funeral as a fitting farewell to a man remembered for his humility, generosity and dedication to family. Many noted that the presence of the Vice President reflected the esteem in which the Deputy Chief of Staff is held within government circles.
The ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths and a final commendation by the clergy, after which the Vice President departed, leaving behind a family strengthened by the knowledge that their loss had been shared by the highest offices of the land.
