Pitso Mosimane Dismisses Benni McCarthy’s Tactical Advantage Ahead of Showdown
According to reports, Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has played down concerns that Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy could gain a tactical advantage from his familiarity with South African football and the players he previously worked with.
The possibility of McCarthy using his knowledge of South African football against Mosimane’s side has attracted attention ahead of their meeting. However, the Bafana Bafana coach believes that understanding an opponent’s methods does not necessarily translate into an advantage when the two teams eventually compete.
Mosimane explained that familiarity can provide useful information about a team’s habits, but football matches are decided by several factors, including tactical adjustments and decisions made during the game. He suggested that knowing how another coach operates only offers a limited understanding of what might happen on the pitch.
“No, it just gives me a little bit of data and understanding of seeing patterns, what is most likely to come,” Mosimane said.
His comments suggest that he is not particularly concerned about McCarthy’s ability to recognise certain players, understand their strengths or anticipate aspects of their approach. Instead, he believes that football requires coaches to remain flexible because opponents can change their strategies depending on the circumstances.
Mosimane also pointed out that previous knowledge does not guarantee that a coach will successfully predict another team’s approach. Tactical plans can be adjusted, making it difficult to rely entirely on information gathered from previous encounters or familiarity with individual players.
He used Orlando Pirates as an example to explain why familiarity with a team’s playing style does not automatically make an opponent capable of stopping them.
“Everybody knows how \[Orlando\] Pirates plays until you get to Orlando Stadium, right? So, it’s the way it is in football.”
The comparison highlighted his belief that knowing a team’s usual approach is different from dealing with it during an actual match.
For McCarthy, his experience in South African football could provide useful insight into the players and football culture he previously encountered. Nevertheless, Mosimane’s position is that such familiarity should not be mistaken for a decisive tactical advantage.
The Bafana Bafana coach appears focused on the unpredictable nature of football, where preparation, adaptability and execution ultimately determine the outcome.
