Owusu Bempah Responds to Mensa Otabil’s Criticism of Prophets

Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah has criticized remarks by Pastor Mensa Otabil about people who identify themselves as prophets in Ghana, renewing debate over the prophetic ministry.

Otabil, the General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), alleged during a sermon that about 90% of people claiming to be prophets in Ghana were “crooks.”

He claimed that some were involved in occultism and other spiritual practices rather than exercising a genuine prophetic gift. He also warned that African Christianity could face a crisis within 20 years if unbiblical teachings and empty promises continued unchecked.

Owusu Bempah, founder of Glorious Word Power Ministries International, took issue with the comments, viewing them as an attack on the prophetic calling and its place in Ghanaian Christianity.

Speaking to his congregation and on radio, he criticised Otabil’s remarks and defended the legitimacy of the prophetic ministry.

The comments have drawn mixed reactions on social media, with some supporting Otabil’s call for greater accountability and others defending the role of prophets in the church.

The dispute has also brought renewed attention to earlier disagreements between the two religious leaders. Owusu Bempah previously criticised Otabil over requests for special financial offerings at the ICGC’s Greater Works Conference.
