Nyayo–Talanta Rail Link Takes Shape Ahead of AFCON 2027
Images of a yellow track-maintenance wagon on freshly laid rails have drawn attention online with social media user Abdulahi Adan declaring that the Nyayo–Talanta link is taking shape.
The post shared widely offers a visual sign of progress on a project tied to Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Kenya Railways is building a dedicated railway connecting the Nairobi CBD to Talanta Sports City through Nyayo Stadium and Kibera.
The works also include a 1.3-kilometre second line from Kibera to Satellite along with two new commuter stations at Talanta Stadium and Laini Saba.
The project was announced earlier this year. In a statement dated January 14, Kenya Railways said the works fall under the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service and aim to ensure smooth access to key tournament venues. The link is meant to connect these facilities to Nairobi Central Station and ease match-day congestion.
Construction has since advanced. By late September, reports said work on the corridor from Nairobi Central through Nyayo to Talanta had entered its final stages.
The line is also meant to outlast the tournament. It is expected to remain a permanent extension of the Nairobi Commuter Rail for residents of Kibera, Lang’ata and Ngong Road.
The project has had a cost. Kenya Railways has warned of further demolitions along the commuter rail corridor as it prepares for the tournament. Clearing land has been contentious with some affected parties describing the demolitions as unfaire.
Kenya will co-host the tournament with Uganda and Tanzania and reliable transport to venues will be a key test.
If the line opens on schedule, fans heading to matches at Talanta could avoid the city’s road congestion. Whether it does will depend on the remaining construction station completion and safety checks.
