“My Party Will Dominate In The Future Since Big Parties Like ANC & EFF Failed” Floyd Shivambu Says

South Africa’s long-standing political parties have once again come under fire from Afrika Mayibuye Movement leader Floyd Shivambu, who claims the ANC and EFF have not shown themselves worthy of voters’ support.

Shivambu made the comments as he reflected on the political events leading up to the 2026 Local Government Elections, when several parties would be tested once again to see whether they can live up to South Africans’ expectations in terms of their electoral success.

An opening for new political groups to present themselves as alternatives, according to the former EFF vice president, was created as people were more dissatisfied with the performance of existing political formations.

If Shivambu is to be believed, his political movement is hell-bent on capitalising on the current political climate to cement its position as a formidable contender for the country’s future leadership position.

He was optimistic that the Afrika Mayibuye Movement will become a major political force in South Africa, implying that it may one day overtake more established political parties.

For the newly formed movement, which ran in its first round of municipal elections in 2026, his remarks couldn’t have come at a more crucial time.

Despite the party’s lack of a national breakthrough, it has shown promising results in several areas of Limpopo. According to preliminary results, Afrika Mayibuye emerged as the second-largest party in both Greater Giyani and Collins Chabane, with shares of about 18% and 14% respectively.

Shivambu has insisted that winning a handful of city council seats isn’t the movement’s ultimate goal. As a whole, it aims to strengthen the national political organization so that it can challenge for leadership positions in the next elections.

Considering Shivambu’s political history, the rise of the party is all the more noteworthy. Before stepping down in 2024, he was a key figure in the 2013 formation of the EFF and held the position of deputy president. After being kicked out of the MK Party, he decided to start his own political faction.

He has been critical of the political groups he has previously associated to, most notably the EFF and the MK Party, and his most recent comments are no exception.

But getting Afrika Mayibuye’s increasing political aspirations translated into consistent electoral support nationwide will be a major obstacle. To achieve long-term success, it is essential to establish robust grassroots institutions, recruit seasoned political leaders, and persuade the public that it can restore good government.

But the message is crystal clear to Shivambu: the parties that have ruled South Africa’s democratic landscape for decades won’t necessarily continue to do so in the future.

Given the ongoing political realignments in the nation, his forecast that Afrika Mayibuye would emerge as a powerful political force is sure to spark much controversy, especially among ANC and EFF supporters.

The question now is whether the movement can really win elections with that level of confidence.
