Mahama Announces Plans to Buy 100 New Ambulances and Repair Another 100
President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans by his government to procure 100 new ambulances and purchase spare parts to restore another 100 ambulances currently out of service.
The announcement forms part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s emergency medical response system and improve access to ambulance services across the country.
Mahama disclosed that the government intends to expand the existing ambulance fleet while also repairing vehicles that have become unusable due to mechanical faults and other maintenance challenges.
“We will buy 100 new ambulances, procure parts to bring another 100 ambulances back to service,” the President stated.
The proposed intervention is expected to increase the number of operational ambulances available to transport patients and respond to medical emergencies in different parts of the country.
Restoring the 100 grounded ambulances could also help government make better use of existing public resources instead of relying entirely on the purchase of new vehicles.
The National Ambulance Service plays a critical role in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system, particularly in responding to road accidents, medical emergencies, childbirth complications and other situations requiring urgent transportation to health facilities.
However, limited availability of functional ambulances can affect response times and make it difficult for patients in some communities to receive emergency assistance when needed.
The government’s plan therefore seeks to address both the shortage of additional vehicles and the maintenance challenges affecting the existing fleet.
If successfully implemented, the procurement and repair programme could significantly improve the country’s emergency transportation capacity.
The announcement comes amid broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and ensure that patients can access timely emergency medical services.
Details concerning the procurement timeline, distribution of the new ambulances and the specific arrangements for repairing the grounded vehicles were not provided in the announcement.
