Mahama Allocates GH¢100 Million To Complete Remand Prisons By 2027
According to a report by 3News published on November 7, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the government has earmarked GH¢100 million in the national budget to ensure the completion of remand prison facilities across Ghana by 2027.
The announcement was made during a religious gathering in Accra, where the President attended the induction of Rev. Dr Stephen Yenusom Wengam for another four-year tenure as General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana.
Speaking at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre on Saturday, Mahama said the financial provision had been made to support the outstanding work on the remand prison projects. He expressed confidence that the facilities would be ready in 2027, making the allocation a significant commitment towards improving the country’s prison infrastructure.
The funding announcement comes alongside the government’s stated intention to complete the facilities within the projected period. However, the report did not provide a breakdown of how the GH¢100 million would be distributed among the various projects or identify their individual completion stages.
Beyond prison development, Mahama used the occasion to discuss the contribution religious organisations could make towards Ghana’s progress. He encouraged churches to become more actively involved in tackling national challenges, particularly in areas involving healthcare, economic development, social welfare and moral values.
The President stressed the importance of religious institutions using their established structures, influence and resources to support efforts aimed at improving living conditions across the country.
First Lady Lordina Mahama was among the dignitaries present at the ceremony. Other attendees included religious leaders, while Rev. Dominic Yeo, Global Chairman of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, officiated at the induction.
Rev. Wengam, who secured nearly 90 per cent of the votes during his re-election in August, welcomed the President’s attendance. He recalled that Mahama had also participated in his previous induction ceremony four years earlier, when he attended as a presidential candidate and special guest.
This time, the President returned as Ghana’s head of state, marking another appearance at the church leadership ceremony.
The GH¢100 million commitment now places attention on whether the government will meet its 2027 completion target for the remand prison facilities.
