KDF Honours First African Kenya Navy Commander Lt Col James Kimaro In Memorial Ceremony

The KDF has honoured the legacy of Lieutenant Colonel James Collins Josiah Kimaro, the first African commander of the Kenya Navy, during a memorial ceremony held in Taveta, Taita Taveta County. The ceremony took place on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Mahoo Day and Boarding Integrated School, where Kimaro began his educational journey.

It was presided over by Deputy Commander Kenya Navy, Brigadier Sankale Kiswaa.

The event brought together senior military officers, retired generals, veterans, government representatives, religious leaders, family members and members of the local community to celebrate the late officer’s contribution to Kenya’s military history.

Kimaro made history on December 29, 1972, when he formally assumed command of the Kenya Navy from Royal Navy officer Commander W.A.E. Hall, becoming the first indigenous African to lead the service.

His journey into military leadership began during Kenya’s transition into independence.

He was among the first group of Kenyan recruits selected for naval training at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, United Kingdom.

Through dedication and professional service, he rose through the ranks before being appointed by Kenya’s founding President, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, to lead the growing naval institution. However, his military career and life were cut short when he died on February 11, 1978.

During Friday’s memorial, military leaders and other attendees laid wreaths at his gravesite in a solemn tribute to his service and contribution.

The KDF noted that his leadership played an important role in establishing indigenous command and strengthening the development of the Kenya Navy.

The ceremony also highlighted the importance of preserving military history, inspiring future generations through the achievements of distinguished officers.
