Kaizer Chiefs Offer Key Midfielder a One-Year Contract Extension

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly offered midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa a one-year contract extension, with an option to extend the agreement for another 12 months.

The development suggests that the Amakhosi are interested in keeping the experienced midfielder at the club as they continue building their squad under head coach Fernando Da Cruz.

According to Joshua Journo, Chiefs have tabled a new one-year deal for Mthethwa, who is popularly known as Ox. The proposed agreement includes an additional 12-month option, giving the club an opportunity to retain his services beyond the initial period.

Mthethwa has remained an important part of the Chiefs midfield because of his work rate, defensive awareness and ability to disrupt opposition attacks. Although he may not always attract attention through goals and assists, his contribution to the team’s overall structure is valuable.

His role is particularly important when Chiefs are pressing their opponents. He uses his energy and positioning to close passing lanes, win possession and make it difficult for opposing midfielders to build attacks comfortably.

His statistics also highlight his defensive contribution this season. In eight league appearances, Mthethwa has recorded 14 successful tackles and 16 interceptions. These numbers demonstrate his ability to recover possession and provide protection for the team’s defence.

However, his game also has areas that could improve. His passing in the final third has sometimes lacked the required accuracy, particularly when attempting difficult forward passes. This is an area where he could still develop.

One positive aspect of Da Cruz’s approach is how he has used Mthethwa according to his strengths. Rather than placing unnecessary creative responsibilities on him, the coach appears to be giving him a role that allows him to concentrate on winning the ball, maintaining pressure and making simple passes.

This approach could help the midfielder continue contributing effectively to the team.

Keeping Mthethwa for another season would give Chiefs some stability in the middle of the park. His experience and understanding of the club’s playing environment could remain useful as the team competes in domestic competitions.

At the same time, Chiefs will need to think about their long-term midfield plans. Retaining an experienced defensive midfielder should not prevent the club from searching for a younger player with similar defensive qualities but greater passing ability.

For now, the reported one-year offer represents a positive development for Mthethwa. The final decision will depend on the progress of negotiations, but the proposed extension indicates that Chiefs still value what he brings to the team.
