Kaizer Chiefs Make A Move That Could Keep The Ox Until 2028

Kaizer Chiefs Make Big Move For Sibongiseni Mthethwa As Naturena Plans Contract Extension Until 2028

Kaizer Chiefs appear determined to retain one of their experienced midfielders, with reports suggesting that the Soweto giants have made an important move to secure Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s future at Naturena.

The 32-year-old midfielder, popularly known as ‘Ox’ or ‘The Bull’, has reportedly received a one-year contract offer from Amakhosi, with an option to extend the agreement for another season. If the proposed arrangement is accepted and the additional year is activated, Mthethwa could remain at the club until June 2028.

According to SoccerBeat, Chiefs have tabled the offer as they look to maintain stability in an area of the team that has become increasingly important during the current campaign. The development was also reported by The South African on Friday, 6 November 2026.

Mthethwa’s situation is particularly interesting because his journey at Naturena has not always been straightforward. He joined Chiefs from Stellenbosch FC in September 2023 after establishing himself as an influential defensive midfielder in the Premier Soccer League.

His arrival generated considerable expectations among supporters, who believed his physical presence, tackling ability and work rate could provide the team with the midfield protection it needed.

However, his early months at the club were affected by injuries and competition for places. Under former coach Nasreddine Nabi, Mthethwa also struggled to secure consistent opportunities, raising questions about his long-term future in the Chiefs squad.

Instead of allowing those difficulties to define his career at Naturena, the midfielder continued working towards regaining his place.

His fortunes reportedly improved when Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze took charge on an interim basis. He gradually returned to the picture and began making a stronger contribution to the team’s midfield structure.

Under Fernando Da Cruz, Mthethwa has continued to feature prominently, with his defensive qualities offering an important balance alongside players such as Lebohang Maboe and Sphesihle Ndlovu.

His ability to win possession, compete physically and protect the defensive line makes him a valuable option, particularly in matches where Chiefs need greater control in the middle of the park.

Retaining experienced players could also prove important as Amakhosi attempt to build a competitive squad capable of challenging consistently for major trophies.

Chiefs supporters will remember that Mthethwa was part of the squad that won the Nedbank Cup in 2025, ending the club’s long wait for silverware. His experience and understanding of the demands at Naturena could therefore be useful as the team pursues further success.

The reported offer, however, should not be confused with a completed contract extension. Neither the player nor Kaizer Chiefs has publicly confirmed that a new agreement has been signed.

Amakhosi are preparing for another important assignment, with a Carling Knockout quarter-final against Siwelele scheduled for Sunday, 8 November 2026, at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The question now is whether Mthethwa will accept the reported proposal and continue his journey with the Soweto giants.

For many Chiefs supporters, keeping a midfielder who understands the club and has fought his way back into the team could be a sensible decision.
