Jacinta Ngobese Explains Why Some Black Voters Continue to Support the DA

Jacinta Ngobese has sparked fresh debate in South Africa after sharing her views on the relationship between immigration concerns, support for the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the political choices of black voters.

The discussion began after Dr Jaycee Marvetona criticised black South Africans who speak out against illegal immigration but continue to support the DA at the ballot box.

Marvetona questioned why voters who are concerned about undocumented foreign nationals would continue backing a political party that governs the Western Cape. He argued that the DA had not done enough to address illegal immigration, particularly in Cape Town, where he claimed undocumented foreign nationals were widespread.

He also raised questions about the responsibilities of the provincial government and the Department of Home Affairs in dealing with immigration-related challenges. In his view, black South Africans who strongly oppose illegal immigration should reconsider their political support for the DA.

Marvetona further suggested that there was a contradiction in the decisions of voters who criticise illegal immigration while continuing to support a party they believe has not adequately addressed the issue.

However, Ngobese offered a different perspective when she responded to his remarks. Rather than focusing solely on the DA’s position on immigration, she pointed to what she believes could be a growing lack of confidence in black political leadership.

According to Ngobese, some black voters may be choosing political parties outside the traditional black-led political establishment because they have become disappointed with politicians from their own communities. She suggested that repeated failures to deliver on promises and address people’s concerns could be weakening public trust.

Ngobese also highlighted the increasing support for the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) among some black voters, describing the changing political landscape as an indication that voters are becoming more willing to consider alternative political movements.

Her response has added another dimension to the ongoing conversation about political loyalty, governance and accountability in South Africa.

While Marvetona believes the DA’s perceived handling of illegal immigration should influence the decisions of black voters, Ngobese argues that dissatisfaction with black political leaders may also explain why some citizens are exploring other political options.

The exchange has reignited discussions about immigration, racial politics, political representation and the growing willingness of South African voters to move away from traditional party loyalties. It also raises questions about whether political support is increasingly being determined by performance, public trust and the ability of parties to address citizens’ everyday concerns.
