Inside Pastor Jimmy Odukoya’s Controversial Remarriage and Nigeria’s Clergy Divorce Crisis
The recent remarriage of popular Nigerian pastor and Nollywood actor, Jimmy Odukoya, has reignited conversations about divorce, remarriage and the responsibilities of Christian leaders, with religious commentators and members of the public expressing different opinions about the development.
According to a report by The Punch on Saturday, November 7, 2026, the senior pastor of The Fountain of Life Church recently introduced his new wife, creative entrepreneur Motunrayo Daniel, popularly known as Mo, to members of the congregation.
Although the occasion marked a new chapter in the pastor’s personal life, it has generated considerable public interest, particularly because of the religious expectations surrounding marriage and remarriage among Christian ministers.
Jimmy Odukoya was previously married to Oluwakemi Banjoko in March 2013 in London. Their marriage produced two children before the relationship eventually ended.
The pastor had reportedly disclosed that the marriage had broken down before he assumed leadership of The Fountain of Life Church in 2023, following the death of his father, the late Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, who founded the church.
However, details surrounding the circumstances that led to the dissolution of his first marriage have largely remained private.
His new wife, Motunrayo Daniel, also reportedly has a previous marriage behind her, having been married to British-Nigerian music producer Mosadoluwa Adegboye, popularly known as itsMOSA.
Beyond the announcement of the marriage, reports and discussions surrounding the relationship have generated additional attention.
There have been claims circulating within sections of the church community suggesting that Mo Daniel was previously close to Jimmy’s elder sister, Pastor Toluwani Odukoya-Ijogun.
Although Toluwani reportedly attended the public introduction of the new bride, speculation about possible family disagreements has circulated on social media. However, such claims have not been independently established, and her social media activity should not be treated as confirmation of any disagreement.
The development has attracted different reactions from members of the Christian community. While some supporters believe Jimmy has the right to rebuild his personal life after the breakdown of his previous marriage, others have questioned how remarriage by prominent church leaders should be understood within established Christian teachings.
The issue has attracted strong opinions from senior Christian figures, many of whom have emphasised the importance of biblical teachings when considering divorce and subsequent marriages.
Former Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) president, Reverend Samson Ayokunle, reportedly maintained that Christian marriage carries serious spiritual responsibilities. He argued that although situations involving extreme threats to a person’s life may justify separation, biblical teachings place significant restrictions on divorce and remarriage.
Evangelist Alaba Akande also stressed the importance of scriptural principles, maintaining that adultery represents the explicit biblical ground for divorce. He warned against allowing personal circumstances or public influence to weaken established religious standards.
Similarly, Pastor Dayo St. John expressed concern about situations in which divorced pastors enter into new marriages, particularly when both individuals have previously been married. He reportedly described such circumstances as “double wahala” and questioned whether they were consistent with biblical expectations.
Apostle Lawrence Achudume also attributed some marital challenges among Christian leaders to what he described as an inadequate understanding of the responsibilities associated with marriage.
Marriage counsellors JeNom Makama and Ibrahim Olalere have also drawn attention to factors that may contribute to marital difficulties among religious leaders.
One concern raised by marriage advisers is that some pastors concentrate extensively on their responsibilities within the church while neglecting the emotional and practical needs of their spouses and children.
The demands of ministry, public expectations, financial pressures and the difficulty of maintaining privacy can place considerable strain on relationships.
Other factors frequently discussed include unrealistic expectations about marriage, inadequate communication, social media influence and changing economic circumstances.
The increasing financial independence of women has also changed traditional relationship dynamics, making mutual understanding, respect and shared responsibilities increasingly important in modern marriages.
For religious leaders, these challenges may become more complicated because their personal relationships are often viewed through the expectations of their congregations.
Jimmy Odukoya’s remarriage has therefore become part of a wider discussion about how Nigerian churches approach divorce, separation and second marriages among their leaders.
While some Christians believe that pastors should be held to strict standards because of their positions, others argue that religious leaders also experience personal difficulties and deserve privacy when dealing with failed marriages.
The discussion ultimately raises important questions about the relationship between biblical interpretation, personal circumstances and the expectations placed on people occupying influential positions within religious institutions.
