Helen Zille Clarifies Her Stand On Undocumented Immigrants In South Africa

Helen Zille has made it crystal clear where the DA stands on undocumented foreigners in South Africa. Her message is simple: fix your papers the proper way or pack your bags. Plenty of people had been saying the DA wants to let anyone without papers stay put, but Zille says that is not what she is pushing for.

She has said before that some people deserve a second chance. That includes Zimbabwe Exemption Permit holders, along with others who add real value to the economy and could qualify for legal status through a system that actually works. Her view is that hardworking people who are already contributing should have a clear route to stay.

Her tone has gotten sharper lately. In March 2026, she pushed for illegal foreign nationals to be arrested, prosecuted and deported, especially those tied to organised crime. She also tied the problem to hijacked buildings and criminal gangs running parts of Johannesburg. Then in June 2026, she doubled down in an interview. Foreigners who are in the country legally must be protected, and those who are not must go through the legal process. She also made it clear that frustration over immigration is no excuse for violence or attacks on foreign nationals.

On paper, the DA’s policy backs tighter border control, strict enforcement of the Immigration Act, a better immigration office and respect for human rights. So the party’s line is basically tough enforcement with a legal exit or entry door for those who qualify.

The real question is whether any of this can be done well. South Africa has been arguing about immigration, jobs, housing and overcrowded public services for years, and every party wants to look like it has the answer. Zille is betting that a firm but fair approach will win over voters who are fed up with the chaos. Critics will say that talk about efficient systems is easy and delivering them is much harder.

So here is the big question for you: should undocumented foreigners be given a fair path to legal status, or should they be sent home no matter how long they have lived and worked here? Drop your take in the comments and tell us who you think is getting this right.
