Ghanaian Politician Kofi Wayo Reportedly Dies
According to a report by GhanaWeb on Saturday November 7, 2026, Ghanaian politician and businessman Charles Eric Kofi Wayo, popularly known as Kofi Wayo or Chuck, has reportedly died, marking the end of the life of one of the country’s most outspoken and unconventional political figures.
According to a death announcement circulated on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Wayo passed away in the early hours of the day at Nyaho Clinic in Accra.
He was a resident of East Legon and belonged to the Ayawaso area. His family is yet to communicate details of his funeral arrangements.
Wayo earned national recognition for his outspoken political views and persistent criticism of successive governments.
Although he never occupied a major political office, his unconventional approach and willingness to challenge established political parties made him a notable figure in Ghana’s political landscape.
His political career saw him associate with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the People’s National Convention (PNC) and later establish his own political organisation, the United Renaissance Party (URP).
After returning to Ghana, Wayo initially aligned himself with the NPP and became known for his criticism of the administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
He later pursued his ambition of becoming the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East on the NPP ticket.
However, his relationship with the party deteriorated after it assumed office in 2001, as he became increasingly dissatisfied with its leadership and approach to governance.
In December 2003, Wayo formally announced his departure from the NPP and joined the PNC, accusing the governing party of failing to deliver on its electoral promises and address the concerns of ordinary Ghanaians.
His association with the PNC was also short-lived, as he eventually established the United Renaissance Party, which received official registration in 2006 and provided a platform for his political ambitions.
Wayo subsequently pursued his aspiration of becoming President of Ghana, presenting himself as an alternative to the country’s established political leadership.
His campaign focused on addressing unemployment, strengthening agriculture and tackling the nation’s economic difficulties.
Despite his ambitions, he struggled to achieve significant electoral success, and his political movement gradually lost prominence.
In March 2017, Wayo announced his decision to withdraw from active politics and concentrate on farming and supporting agricultural activities in rural communities.
At the time, he criticised the country’s major political parties, arguing that their leaders had placed personal and political interests above the welfare of ordinary citizens.
He also expressed dissatisfaction with successive governments over what he considered inadequate attention to rural farmers, particularly in providing agricultural equipment, logistical assistance and access to healthcare.
Following his withdrawal from active politics, Wayo largely disappeared from public political engagements and maintained a relatively low profile.
His prolonged absence eventually generated public interest, particularly regarding his whereabouts and well-being.
In March 2026, his close associate, Ibrahim Zakaria, reportedly raised concerns about his extended absence from public life.
