Floyd Shivambu Teases Julius Malemas EFF After Failing to Get More Than 7%
The municipal elections were held on November 1, 2024, and they resulted in a significant shift in the political landscapes of South Africa and the surrounding areas. After receiving 88% of the national vote, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were able to secure 6.24% of the vote, which resulted in 271 seats being won by the party. There was a significant disparity between this outcome and the performance of the African National Congress (ANC), which received 31.73% of the vote, the Democratic Alliance (DA), which received 23.99% of the vote, and the MK Party, which received 9.42% of the vote.
According to political figures, the results constitute a significant electoral upset, which has prompted them to provide analysis and commentary. Floyd Shivambu, the leader of the Afrika Mayibuye movement, has expressed his overall satisfaction with the performance of his party, while at the same time directing criticism toward the performance of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Shivambu argued that it was a significant cause for concern that the party was unable to surpass the 7% threshold, despite having access to substantial financial resources and positions of authority within the government.
It was his contention that the electorate was exhibiting a glaring lack of patience with the political parties that had been in power for a long time. “The voters are always correct,” Shivambu said, highlighting what he perceived to be a decisive rejection of legacy parties based on the results of the election. Despite the fact that the EFF’s campaign was marked by a significant expenditure, which included participation in a number of music festivals, this investment did not result in a corresponding increase in voter support.
According to Shivambu, the fact that the party was unable to secure more than seven percent of the vote, even while simultaneously holding positions of authority in the municipal government, raised serious concerns. A wider political reach was achieved as a direct consequence of the EFF’s strategy, which centered on a campaign that was conducted on a national scale rather than on efforts that were conducted locally.
It is clear that the party has significantly expanded beyond its traditional regional base, as evidenced by the fact that it won votes in every municipality that it ran for office. With an eye toward the future, Shivambu emphasized the significance of strengthening internal structures and establishing a foundation for future electoral success. He believes that by the year 2029, the Afrika Mayibuye movement will have established itself as a powerful force in South African politics, specifically referring to the elections that will take place at the national and provincial levels.
Shivambu is still optimistic about the movement’s potential for expansion, despite the fact that he is aware of the amount of time that will be necessary to establish a party infrastructure that is sustainable. He suggests that a deliberate and strategic approach will be taken in order to construct a solid political foundation. The outcomes of these elections unquestionably pose a challenge for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and they highlight the significance of being responsive to the sentiments of voters within the context of the South African political arena.
