Five Ghanaians Killed in US Since I Became Ambassador – Victor Smith Reveals
Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, has raised concerns over the deaths of Ghanaian nationals in the US, disclosing that five citizens have died under various circumstances since he assumed office.
He indicated that most of the deaths involved gun-related incidents and revealed that the Ghanaian Embassy had formally conveyed the country’s concerns to the US authorities.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points programme on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Smith said he had issued an official statement expressing Ghana’s dissatisfaction with the situation.
He, however, acknowledged that the country could not conclude that the US government had failed to take appropriate measures but maintained that Ghana had a responsibility to communicate its concerns.
The ambassador also appealed to Ghanaians living in the United States to take their personal safety seriously, particularly when choosing where to live and the places they visit.
He advised members of the Ghanaian community to remain vigilant and exercise caution in their daily activities, noting that he could not account for the specific security conditions in every location across the country.
Smith further disclosed that he had written to the US State Department following the murder of Ghanaian teenager Jarvis Owusu to formally register Ghana’s concerns and request clarification on the circumstances surrounding his death.
He stressed the need for investigations to establish whether allegations of bullying at the teenager’s school had any connection to his murder.
He also called for the school to cooperate fully with the New York Police Department as investigations into the case continue.
