Elias Mokwana Gets Famous Number 14 Shirt at Kaizer Chiefs After a Long Journey

Elias Mokwana has begun a new chapter in his football career after joining Kaizer Chiefs, but one detail about his arrival has attracted special attention. The 27-year-old winger has been handed the number 14 jersey, a shirt number strongly associated with former Amakhosi star Simphiwe Tshabalala. For Mokwana, the move is also the fulfilment of a childhood dream because he grew up supporting the Soweto giants.

Mokwana’s journey to the top was not an easy one. He started playing football at a lower level before gaining attention at clubs such as Gemsbok Classic and Platinum City Rovers. His performances eventually earned him a move to Sekhukhune United, where he continued developing and established himself as one of the promising attacking players in South African football.

His progress opened the door to international football, with the winger earning a move to Tunisian giants Espérance de Tunis in 2024. He later spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Saudi Arabian side Al-Hazem, gaining valuable experience outside South Africa. During his time abroad, he also enjoyed team success and continued representing Bafana Bafana.

The number 14 shirt carries its own history at Kaizer Chiefs because it was famously worn by Simphiwe Tshabalala, one of the club’s most recognised former players. Mokwana will now have the opportunity to build his own story in the same number. Rather than being judged only by the history of the shirt, he will be expected to prove his value through his performances on the pitch.

Speaking about his move, Mokwana described joining Chiefs as a dream come true and said he had always wanted to prove himself at the club and help bring trophies to Naturena. He also revealed that he immediately called his mother to share the good news after learning that the move was confirmed. Chiefs supporters will now be eager to see how the new signing performs as he begins his journey in the famous gold and black colours.
