Chiefs’ Da Cruz Explodes At Critics Over Tactical Blame

DA CRUZ SENDS STRONG MESSAGE TO CHIEFS CRITICS AS HE DEFENDS HIS TACTICAL APPROACH

Soft headline: Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz explains why playing with three or four defenders does not change his attacking philosophy.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has responded to criticism surrounding his tactical decisions, insisting that the number of defenders his team uses does not determine how they approach attacking football.

The French tactician has attracted attention from supporters and football observers because of his decision to alternate between a traditional back four and a back five during the 2026/27 campaign.

Some Amakhosi supporters have questioned whether deploying three central defenders makes the team too defensive and limits its attacking potential. However, Da Cruz believes such criticism overlooks the principles behind his football philosophy.

According to the Chiefs coach, the most important consideration is not the defensive structure but the team’s ability to maintain its attacking identity regardless of the formation.

“Back four, back five doesn’t impact our offensive game model, that’s the most important we want to keep our offensive ideas and principles in our game model,” Da Cruz explained.

His comments highlight his determination to build a tactically flexible Kaizer Chiefs side capable of adapting to different opponents without abandoning its attacking intentions.

The coach’s decision to use different defensive formations has also been influenced by injuries within the squad, particularly in the left-back position.

Players such as Paseka Mako, Bradley Cross and Nkanyiso Shinga have experienced fitness problems, forcing the technical team to explore alternative combinations.

Pule Mmodi has also been given opportunities in a different role, operating as a wing-back when Chiefs deploy three central defenders.

Da Cruz previously explained that having different tactical options allows his team to respond to the demands of individual matches while making the best use of available players.

His latest comments come at a time when pressure is mounting on the Chiefs technical team to deliver consistent performances and positive results.

Amakhosi have endured a challenging campaign, including their elimination from continental competition and a disappointing 2-1 Soweto Derby defeat against Orlando Pirates on 31 October.

Nevertheless, Da Cruz has repeatedly called for patience, maintaining that developing a competitive team requires time, consistency and tactical understanding.

For Chiefs supporters, the biggest question will be whether the coach can translate his attacking philosophy into goals and victories.

His message, however, is clear: whether Amakhosi play with four defenders or five, their ambition to attack and impose their football identity should remain unchanged.
