Bafana Star Mofokeng Linked to Lille and Leverkusen – His New Agency Could Change Everything

South African football fans have another reason to get excited about Relebohile Mofokeng. The young Bafana Bafana forward, who moved to Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise earlier this year, is already attracting attention from some of Europe’s bigger teams. Reports suggest both Lille in France and Bayer Leverkusen in Germany have shown interest in the 22-year-old.

Mofokeng left Orlando Pirates in July on a four-year deal with Union SG. Since arriving in Belgium he has settled quickly and shown the same pace, skill and goal threat that made him a fan favourite at the Buccaneers. His performances in the UEFA Europa League have not gone unnoticed, and bigger clubs are clearly watching.

What makes the situation even more interesting is the agency now looking after him. Mofokeng recently joined THE·TEAM, a global sports and entertainment agency. The company strengthened its Belgian football side earlier this year by buying SportPlus, a well-known local agency. The founders of SportPlus, Nico Vaesen and Evert Maeschalck, stayed on and now hold senior roles. Their experience in the Belgian market and their wider European contacts are expected to help players like Mofokeng.

THE·TEAM already represents some of the biggest names in world football. The list includes Real Madrid star Federico Valverde, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, and several other established players across the top leagues. The agency also looks after African talents such as Ghana’s Jordan Ayew and Zimbabwe’s Marshall Munetsi. For a young South African still early in his European career, being in that company is a major plus.

The interest from Lille and Leverkusen is still at an early stage, but it shows how quickly Mofokeng has made an impact. Union Saint-Gilloise paid a record fee for a South African domestic player to sign him, and he has already repaid some of that faith with goals and strong displays. Having a well-connected agency behind him means any future move will be handled professionally and with the right contacts.

For Bafana Bafana, Mofokeng’s progress is good news. A regular in the national team set-up, he has already shown he can perform at a higher level. If the links to Lille or Leverkusen develop further, it would be another step up for one of South Africa’s most exciting young talents. Right now, though, the focus is on continuing to impress at Union SG while knowing that his new agency has the network to open bigger doors when the time is right.
