‘A blow to the nation’: President Mahama pays tribute to late CLOGSAG boss and twin brother

A tribute by President John Dramani Mahama, published in the funeral brochure for Dr Isaac Akuetteh Bampoe Addo and his twin brother, Sidney Nii Oko Bampoe Addo, has described their passing as the loss of two men who gave their working lives to public service.

The tribute, headlined “Tribute by the President and People of Ghana”, was contained in the brochure for the final funeral rites held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra. Dr Isaac Bampoe Addo, former Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana, died on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the age of 59. His twin brother, Sidney Nii Oko Bampoe Addo, a Deputy Director at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2026, also aged 59, barely three weeks after his brother’s death.

In the tribute, President Mahama said the government and people of Ghana received the news of Dr Addo’s passing with sadness, only for the nation to be hit by the death of his twin brother three weeks later.

“They came into the world together and left it within weeks of each other. For their family the loss is doubled. For the nation, it is the loss of two men who gave their working lives to public service,” he wrote.

The President highlighted Dr Addo’s tenure as CLOGSAG Executive Secretary, noting that he fought for better conditions of service for public servants, negotiated their salaries and allowances, worked to secure their pensions and built welfare and housing schemes to support them in service and in retirement.

He described him as a good friend, recalling his address to the Public Services International conference in Accra in November 2025, where he earned respect from delegates across Africa and the Arab world for his firm negotiating style and his good faith.

President Mahama also praised Sidney’s contribution at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, stating that his work on data on crop production, prices and the national food supply informed government policy. “Every government needs both: a workforce that is respected, and decisions grounded in evidence,” the President stated.

The two brothers were siblings of the Deputy Chief of Staff (Administration), Nana Oye Bampoe Addo.

According to the funeral arrangements, the burial service took place at the State House forecourt, with filing past from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., followed by the burial service from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Private interment followed, with the final funeral rites continuing at the same venue from noon to 5:00 p.m. A thanksgiving service is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, at Winners Chapel in the North Industrial Area, beginning at 9:00 a.m., with a thanksgiving reception to follow at Accra Academy in Bubuashie at noon.
