Why I ditched my signature pink look – DJ Cuppy
Nigerian disc jockey Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has explained why she abandoned her signature pink look, saying personal growth has made her unwilling to be defined by one colour.
Cuppy, who became widely recognised for her pink hair, outfits and accessories, discussed the change in an interview with GQ Poland, a clip of which was shared on X on Friday.
“I was known for the colour pink, and it was my identity for so many years, and a lot of people are asking what happened to the pink,” she said.
According to the entertainer, moving away from the colour reflects her personal development rather than a change in her personality.
“I want people to understand that actually growth is something that will always come, and I don’t think I should be boxed into a colour,” she said.
“Pink for me meant power, vibrancy, expression, unapologeticness, positionality, and that’s still me, but I’m able to express it through other colours as well.”
The DJ traced her attachment to pink to the early years of her career, when she used the colour to express her femininity while establishing herself in an industry largely dominated by men.
“When I think about my style, I think about a woman in a male-dominated industry,” she said. “Maybe also when I first started 17 years ago, a young girl that was using pink to represent her femininity and stay in the room.”
She said her experiences over the years had given her the confidence to express herself differently.
“Now that I’ve been through a lot of doors and kicked down some windows, I feel like I can represent my femininity through any colour,” she said.
Describing her current fashion identity, Cuppy said it is “vibrant, grounded and ethnical”.
The interview forms part of Cuppy’s recent feature in GQ Poland’s November 2026 edition, in which she also discussed her career, education, philanthropy and connection to African culture.
Cuppy, the daughter of businessman Femi Otedola, is also a music producer and philanthropist. She founded the Cuppy Foundation in 2018 and has supported initiatives focused on education and opportunities for young people across Africa.
