Vice President Launches “THANK YOU TEACHER” Raffle to Support Cancer Care
Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is supporting the Ghana National Association of Teachers’ initiative aimed at celebrating teachers and raising funds to support cancer care in Ghana. The initiative, which is a national raffle known as “Thank You Teacher”, aims to raise funds to support cancer care in Ghana.
Access to cancer treatment requires specialised facilities, equipment and sustained investment. For patients who depend on such services, the continued operation of treatment centres is critical. For this reason, the Ghana National Association of Teachers launched the “Thank You Teacher” National Raffle, expecting to mobilise funds to support cancer care at the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, a state of the art facility wholly owned by GNAT.
As concerns grow over the need to sustain specialised treatment facilities and improve support for patients, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang endorsed the initiative, linking the recognition of teachers to the broader responsibility of supporting vulnerable members of society.
“As a teacher, I validate this initiative because I am who I am because I had a teacher.” she said.
Incorporated in 2007 by the Swedish Government, the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, started patient treatment operations in early 2012. Treatment procedures offered at the time were Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Brachytherapy, Imaging as well as second opinion visits for suspected cancer cases. This Centre has attracted and treated many patients from around West Africa.
At the launch, the President of GNAT, Prosper Tachie, appealed to government to provide financial support, in any amount possible, to help maintain the facility and sustain its operations.
Spicing it up, the CEO of the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, Dr. Clement Egyin Edusa, noted how critical the facility remains in Ghana’s cancer care system.
“Personally, as an oncologist, the joy is being able to guide my patients to diagnose their conditions properly and on time, and offer treatment locally that will benefit them. We will continue to acknowledge the visionary owners of this institution – The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT)”.
He added that, GNAT has shown that its mission extends beyond classrooms into communities, beyond education into healthcare, and beyond advocacy into nation-building.
While the “Thank You Teacher” raffle recognises the contribution of teachers to national development, its cancer-care objective places the spotlight on the need to sustain specialised medical facilities.
The success of the initiative will depend on how efficient resources are mobilised to support the continued delivery of cancer treatment services in Ghana.
