Sundowns Dominate PSL Possession Rankings as Chiefs and Pirates Trail Behind

Mamelodi Sundowns have continued to demonstrate their dominance in South African football, emerging as the leading team in the latest PSL possession rankings published by Sofascore. The Brazilians occupy the top position with an impressive average possession rate of 68.3%, putting them comfortably ahead of their closest competitors.

The statistics highlight Sundowns’ preference for controlling matches through possession and dictating the tempo of play. Their ability to keep the ball for extended periods has become an important part of their football identity, allowing them to manage games and put opponents under pressure.

Kaizer Chiefs occupy second place on the rankings with 57.4% possession. The Soweto giants are among the leading teams in this category, although there is a considerable gap between their figure and the percentage recorded by Sundowns.

Orlando Pirates are not far behind Chiefs, taking third position with an average possession rate of 56.0%. The Buccaneers have also shown their willingness to build attacks through controlled passing and movement, placing them among the top three teams in the league.

Durban City are fourth on the list with 52.7%, an encouraging figure that places them ahead of several other PSL clubs. Their position shows that they have also been able to compete in terms of ball retention, despite facing competition from some of the country’s more established teams.

Milford FC complete the top five with 52.6% possession. They are just 0.1 percentage points behind Durban City, making the battle for fourth position particularly close in the published rankings.

Here is the top five according to the Sofascore statistics:

One of the biggest talking points from the figures is the gap between Sundowns and the other teams. Their 68.3% average is 10.9 percentage points higher than Kaizer Chiefs, who occupy second place. This underlines how strongly the Pretoria-based club has performed in the possession category.

However, possession statistics do not automatically determine which team is the most successful. Keeping the ball is one aspect of football, while creating clear scoring opportunities, defending effectively and converting chances are equally important.

Nevertheless, the rankings offer an interesting picture of the different playing approaches used by teams in the Premier Soccer League. Sundowns currently lead the way, while Chiefs and Pirates continue to feature prominently among the clubs with the highest possession figures.

With the statistics sourced from Sofascore, supporters will undoubtedly have plenty to discuss, particularly regarding the difference between the top three teams.
