SA Rugby Mourns Former Currie Cup Winner Christie Noble After His Death at 63
South African rugby has been plunged into mourning following the death of former Natal winger Christie Noble, who passed away at the age of 63 after a short illness.
Noble died in the early hours of Friday, November 6, 2026, with SA Rugby president Mark Alexander leading tributes to the former South African Rugby Football Federation (SARFF) player for his contribution to the development of the game.
Noble enjoyed a distinguished playing career, representing Western Province, WP Liga, Eastern Province and Natal. However, his most memorable achievement came in 1990 when he was part of the historic Natal team that won its first-ever Currie Cup title during the union’s centenary year.
Natal defeated Northern Transvaal 18-12 at Loftus Versfeld to secure the historic trophy. Noble’s involvement in that team was particularly significant because he was the only black player in the squad at a time when opportunities in South African rugby were severely restricted.
Alexander described Noble’s achievements as remarkable, considering the racial barriers that existed in the sport during his playing days.
He said Noble’s talent, determination and commitment helped sustain and develop rugby beyond the traditional structures of the game.
The SA Rugby president added that Noble’s influence extended beyond his playing career, particularly through his involvement in coaching and community development.
After retiring from professional rugby, Noble continued serving the sport and was appointed assistant coach of the first Springbok Women’s team in 2004.
His family also has strong connections to South African rugby. His older brother, John, played for the Proteas of the SARFF, while his nephew is former Springbok winger and current Sharks head coach JP Pietersen.
Alexander said players such as Noble helped lay the foundations for a more inclusive rugby environment and inspired future generations to believe they could reach the highest levels of the sport.
He extended condolences to Noble’s family, friends, former teammates and everyone affected by his passing.
Noble leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond his historic Currie Cup achievement, with his contribution to breaking barriers and promoting inclusivity remaining an important part of South African rugby history.
