Nearly 20 Years Of Public Funds, No Hospital: Ondo Community’s Federal Health Centre Left Abandoned – Report

MonITNG described the situation as a disturbing example of how the failure to properly manage public projects directly affects ordinary Nigerians, particularly vulnerable communities that depend on government-owned healthcare facilities.

Residents of Logundu in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, have been left with no functional hospital as a Federal Primary Health Centre meant to provide essential medical services to the community has remained abandoned despite nearly 20 years of reported budgetary allocations and releases for its construction and equipping, leaving residents without access to basic healthcare.

The disturbing condition of the facility was exposed in a report released on Friday, November 6, 2026, by civic technology organisation, MonITNG, which shared photographs showing the premises overtaken by weeds and the building yet to become operational.

MonITNG called on the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to investigate the project and establish what happened to the public funds reportedly allocated to it.

According to the report, the health centre was established to provide essential healthcare services to the people of Logundu but has remained non-functional, despite successive appropriations and reported releases of funds over nearly 20 years.

MonITNG described the situation as a disturbing example of how the failure to properly manage public projects directly affects ordinary Nigerians, particularly vulnerable communities that depend on government-owned healthcare facilities.

The organisation noted that the consequences of the abandoned project extend beyond the deteriorating building, as pregnant women are forced to seek medical attention elsewhere, while children and elderly residents struggle to access basic healthcare.

According to the report, families in the community are also compelled to bear additional financial costs and health risks because a facility intended to provide accessible medical services has failed to fulfil its purpose.

MonITNG raised concerns over the situation, particularly at a time when the Nigerian Government claimed to have committed billions of naira to strengthening and renovating primary healthcare centres across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.

MonITNG questioned the effectiveness of government monitoring mechanisms and the accountability of officials and contractors responsible for executing and supervising publicly funded healthcare projects.

“Corruption is not just about money disappearing from government accounts. It is about hospitals that cannot treat patients, communities denied essential services and preventable suffering imposed on ordinary citizens,” the organisation stated.

MonITNG urged the ICPC, NPHCDA and other relevant authorities to investigate the allocations and releases made for the Logundu Federal Health Centre, determine how the funds were utilised and identify officials or contractors who may be responsible for the project’s failure.

It also called for accountability, insisting that those entrusted with public resources must be made to explain why a project intended to serve an entire community has remained abandoned for years.

“The people of Logundu deserve a functioning health centre, not an abandoned building. Public funds must deliver results, and those entrusted with them must answer to the people,” MonITNG added.

The organisation’s report raises fresh concerns about the implementation of Nigeria’s primary healthcare development programmes and the fate of public funds allocated to projects that remain incomplete or unusable.
