Mahama details Gov’t support for families of Ghanaians killed in New York

President John Dramani Mahama has outlined measures taken by his government to support the families of two Ghanaians who reportedly died through violent incidents in New York, United States, within a short period.

The President said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ghana’s diplomatic mission in New York had been providing assistance to the affected families, including facilitating the travel of the mother of 15-year-old Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong to the United States to mourn her son.

Speaking during an engagement with the Presidential Press Corps after returning from the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda, Mr Mahama commended the Foreign Affairs Ministry for its intervention and support.

He specifically praised Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister James Gyakye Quayson, who supervised the ministry’s activities during his absence, for helping the bereaved family.

The President also disclosed that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in New York had visited the family to convey the government’s condolences and provide assistance during the difficult period.

He said Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa had instructed the mission to do everything within its capacity to support the affected families.

The support follows the fatal shooting of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager who was reportedly shot while walking to school in the Bronx on October 29, 2026. His mother, Doris Adu Gyamfi, subsequently travelled from Ghana to the United States following assistance from the Ghanaian government and an intervention by US President Donald Trump to facilitate her visa.

Mr Mahama also disclosed that another 24-year-old Ghanaian man had recently been found dead at a dumpsite in New York, raising further concerns about the safety of Ghanaians living in the United States.

The government has pledged to work with American authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and pursue justice for the victims.

The President’s remarks underline the government’s commitment to supporting Ghanaians abroad and ensuring that bereaved families receive diplomatic and consular assistance when tragedy strikes.
