Mahama announces recruitment of 8,000 additional health workers by end of 2026
President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to recruit an additional 8,000 health workers by the end of 2026, bringing the total number of health professionals recruited this year to 16,000.
The President said the government had already recruited 8,000 health workers, including nurses and other professionals, and was preparing to add another 8,000 before the end of the year.
He said the recruitment formed part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery, ease pressure on emergency departments and ensure district hospitals have enough qualified personnel to provide essential services.
“Last year, we placed 13,500 nurses and midwives on the government payroll. This year we have recruited 8,000 health workers, including nurses and other professionals, and expect to add a further 8,000 by the end of the year, making 16,000 in all,” he said.
President Mahama also disclosed that 100 doctors had accepted postings to underserved communities, compared with the 25 doctors previously serving those areas.
He welcomed the doctors’ decision to serve in the communities but said government must provide the necessary support to enable them to work effectively and build their careers.
“The underserved communities covered by our deployment policy previously had a total of 25 doctors. In the latest round of postings, 100 doctors have accepted placements in these communities,” he said.
“I welcome their willingness to serve, and their decision places a responsibility on government to provide the support that is needed to practise effectively and build their careers in the communities that they have opted for.”
The President said the distribution of health professionals would continue to receive attention, noting that district health services needed a more predictable supply of qualified personnel, including laboratory technicians, nurses and other specialists.
He further explained that the government intended to establish regular annual recruitment of health workers to address the long waiting periods some professionals face before gaining employment in the public health service.
According to him, some health professionals, particularly pharmacists and allied health workers, have had to wait as long as five years for a single recruitment exercise.
“At times, some cadres of the health profession, including pharmacists and allied health workers, have had to wait as long as five years for a single recruitment batch,” he said.
