Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park Proposes Replacing Big Six Image On Ghanaian Banknotes
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has proposed replacing the image of Ghana’s Big Six currently featured on selected Ghanaian banknotes with the historic photograph of Dr Kwame Nkrumah declaring the country’s independence on March 6, 1957.
The proposal has sparked discussions about how Ghana’s independence history should be represented on the national currency, particularly as the country approaches its 70th anniversary of independence in 2027.
According to the proposal, the iconic photograph of Nkrumah announcing Ghana’s independence deserves a place on the country’s banknotes because of its historical significance and the central role he played in the struggle for self-government.
The discussion also brings renewed attention to the political differences that existed among Ghana’s leading independence figures.
In 1949, Nkrumah broke away from the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) following disagreements over the approach and pace of the independence struggle. He subsequently established the Convention People’s Party (CPP), which mobilised ordinary Ghanaians around the demand for immediate self-government.
Although Nkrumah and the other members of the Big Six shared the broader objective of ending colonial rule, they had different political visions and approaches to achieving independence.
However, the contributions of the other five members of the Big Six remain an important part of Ghana’s history and should not be dismissed when celebrating Nkrumah’s achievements.
On March 6, 1957, Nkrumah stood before thousands of Ghanaians and delivered the historic independence declaration that marked the country’s emergence from British colonial rule.
Supporters of the proposal believe the photograph would serve as a powerful reminder of that defining moment and recognise Nkrumah’s historic leadership.
The proposal is expected to generate further debate about national identity, historical recognition and the personalities Ghana chooses to celebrate on its currency.
