Korle Bu, Komfo Anokye, Tamale Teaching Hospital to get expanded emergency centres
President John Mahama has announced plans to expand the Accident and Emergency centres at four major hospitals in Ghana, with work expected to begin in 2027.
The hospitals earmarked for the expansion are Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital and the 37 Military Hospital.
Speaking on the planned intervention, Mahama said the government intends to increase emergency bed capacity to at least 10 per cent of each hospital’s functional bed capacity to reduce pressure on their emergency departments.
At Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the expansion will increase the current emergency bed capacity from 65 to at least 150.
“We are therefore implementing measures to expand emergency bed capacity to at least 10% of each facility’s functional bed capacity,” the President said.
He added that the expansion would be accompanied by the recruitment and provision of the necessary staff, medical equipment, oxygen and essential supplies to ensure the additional beds are fully operational.
While the expansion works are being prepared, Mahama announced that the Ghana Armed Forces Critical Care and Emergency Hospital would begin receiving patients immediately.
He said the facility would provide additional capacity to help manage increases in emergency cases.
The President added that closer cooperation between military and civilian health services would allow the country to make better use of its available healthcare resources.
