Grief In Nakuru As KDF Soldier Shem Kiprotich Who Drowned In Kwale Is Laid To Rest
A cloud of grief engulfed Nakuru County as Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier Shem Kiprotich was laid to rest at his home in Sinendet village, Olenguruone.
Kiprotich, a Kenya Air Force officer, drowned at Diani Beach in Kwale County, leaving his family, friends, colleagues and the entire community of Sinendet devastated. ae91
According to a tribute shared on Facebook on October 27, 2026, Kiprotich had recently received a transfer to the Coast region and was looking forward to beginning a fresh chapter in his military career.
Before formally reporting for duty, he and his colleagues decided to take a swim at the popular beach resort. Strong ocean waves swept him away without warning.
A joint search and rescue operation was launched immediately after Kiprotich went missing in the water.
The effort ended in tragedy the following day when his body was retrieved from the ocean.
That same day had been marked on his calendar as the date he would officially begin his new duties at the Coast posting.
Kiprotich had reportedly gone swimming with colleagues as a moment of relaxation before his transfer duties officially began, while a joint search operation recovered his body the following day, the same date he was scheduled to assume his new role.
Condolence messages spread rapidly across social media, with the Facebook page Wish to Be a Kenyan Soldier KDF leading tributes and describing Kiprotich as a young man who had worked extremely hard to realise his dream of serving in uniform.
At his burial in Nakuru, family members, fellow servicemen and women, and residents of Sinendet mourned one of their own. Tributes described his dedication to his country, a dedication mourners said would not be forgotten.
May Shem Kiprotich rest in eternal peace.
