Former Mamelodi Sundowns Defender Phelelani Mpangase Backs Sibisi’s Bafana Bafana Omission

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Phelelani Mpangase has supported the decision to leave Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi out of the latest Bafana Bafana squad.

Sibisi’s omission has attracted attention among South African football supporters, particularly considering his leadership responsibilities at Orlando Pirates and his experience in the Premier Soccer League.

However, Mpangase believes the decision by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is justified, suggesting that the defender’s current performances do not necessarily warrant a place in the national team.

The former Sundowns player has effectively added his voice to the debate surrounding the selection of defenders for the national team, with competition for places becoming increasingly important as Bafana prepare for upcoming international assignments.

Sibisi has established himself as an important figure at Orlando Pirates, where he serves as captain and plays a significant role in organising the team’s defence.

Nevertheless, being a club captain does not automatically guarantee selection for the national team, as players are expected to meet the coach’s tactical requirements and performance standards.

Broos has consistently emphasised the importance of competition and consistency when selecting his Bafana Bafana squad.

Mpangase’s comments are likely to generate further debate among Pirates supporters, some of whom may feel that Sibisi’s experience and leadership qualities should have earned him a place in the squad.

The discussion also highlights the pressure on South African defenders to maintain consistent performances at club level if they want to secure international recognition.

For now, Sibisi will have to continue focusing on his performances for Orlando Pirates as the debate over his Bafana Bafana omission continues.
