FG Blames Gas Shortage for Power Outages in Lagos, Abuja and Three Other States
The Federal Government has attributed worsening electricity supply across Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara and Oyo states to gas shortages, maintenance challenges and reduced power generation from hydroelectric plants.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, acknowledged the disruptions, explaining that the affected areas had recently experienced improvements in electricity supply before the latest decline.
In a statement issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Adeola Adelabu, the minister said preliminary assessments indicated that the situation was not caused by a major or systemic failure of the national grid.
He explained that inadequate gas supply to thermal power stations, operational difficulties and reduced hydropower output were contributing to the electricity challenges.
Electricity distribution data showed that the 11 distribution companies received a combined allocation of 2,926 megawatts as of 4:41 p.m. on Thursday, November 5.
Abuja Electricity Distribution Company received the highest allocation of 633MW, while Yola Disco received the lowest at 74MW. Ikeja Electric received 249MW.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government announced that it had facilitated the release of 44 containers of electricity equipment from Apapa ports in Lagos. More than 300 containers had reportedly remained stranded at the ports, with some there since 2014.
Tegbe said technical experts would inspect the released equipment before serviceable materials are deployed to ongoing electricity projects.
The minister assured Nigerians that the government was engaging relevant agencies and electricity distribution companies to address the challenges and restore normal supply.
However, consumers are still waiting for improved electricity supply as households and businesses continue to face the effects of unreliable power.
