Elsa Storm Recalls Kaizer Motaung Jr’s Remarkable Training Incident at Kaizer Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs fitness coach Elsa Storm has recounted a remarkable incident involving Kaizer Motaung Jr during his playing days at Naturena, revealing how the former footballer once refused to stop a training session despite dangerous weather conditions.

Storm shared the story from the period when Muhsin Ertugral was in charge of the Soweto giants. During that time, physical conditioning was taken seriously, with running exercises forming an important part of the team’s preparation.

According to Storm, Ertugral maintained strict expectations regarding fitness training and was not pleased when players failed to complete their assigned exercises. His approach created an environment where footballers were expected to follow instructions and meet demanding physical standards.

The former fitness coach explained that she and the players were once conducting a running session when heavy rainfall began. The situation became more concerning when lightning started striking in the surrounding area.

Recognising the potential danger, Storm decided that continuing the exercise was no longer safe. She encouraged the players to stop running and look for somewhere protected from the storm.

However, Motaung Jr was reportedly unwilling to abandon the session, as he was worried about facing Ertugral without completing the required work.

“In Muhsin’s world, running for the sake of running meant punishment. And there we were, just running,” Storm said in a piece published on Algo Sports.

She further explained that the rainfall intensified, making the training conditions increasingly uncomfortable and dangerous.

“There was lightning and pouring rain. I told the guys it was getting dangerous and we should find shelter. Kaizer Junior stopped, his face soaking wet.

“‘Els, we will rather get killed here together by lightning than telling that coach we not running.’”

The story provides an interesting insight into the demanding atmosphere that surrounded Kaizer Chiefs during Ertugral’s time as head coach.

Motaung Jr was among the players who experienced those training standards before eventually moving away from playing football and becoming involved in the club’s administration.
