ANC Set to Review GNU Framework as 2026 Local Government Election Results Continue to Come In
The African National Congress (ANC) has indicated that it intends to review its participation in the Government of National Unity (GNU) as counting continues in South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections.
The announcement comes amid growing political uncertainty as election results from municipalities and major metropolitan areas continue to emerge, potentially reshaping the country’s political landscape.
ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri confirmed that the party has not yet entered formal coalition negotiations with other political formations. She explained that the party’s immediate priority remains monitoring the ongoing vote-counting and results tabulation process conducted by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
However, the ANC’s intention to reassess the GNU arrangement has attracted attention, particularly because the governing partnership has faced political disagreements and differing positions among its participating parties.
The Government of National Unity was established following the 2024 national and provincial elections after the ANC lost its parliamentary majority for the first time since the end of apartheid in 1994. The arrangement brought together several political parties to form a national government.
Since its establishment, the GNU has experienced tensions over policy decisions, governance priorities and disagreements among its political partners.
The outcome of the 2026 local government elections is now expected to play an important role in determining the ANC’s political strategy, especially as the party faces the possibility of having to negotiate coalition agreements in several municipalities.
Although the ANC has not officially started negotiations, its planned review of the GNU suggests that the party could reconsider aspects of its current political arrangement depending on the election results.
Meanwhile, attention remains focused on the IEC as the counting process continues across the country.
The coming days could prove significant for South African politics, with the election results potentially determining how political parties approach coalition partnerships at both municipal and national levels.
