Why Okudzeto Ablakwa Has Sued NPP Communicator Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah and Media General – Bongo Ideas
In an Official Facebook Post by Bongo Ideas on November 3, 2026, attention has been drawn to the legal action initiated by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa against New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicator Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah and Media General following serious allegations made against the minister during a discussion on Onua FM.
The post highlights the controversy surrounding allegations that the Foreign Affairs Minister diverted funds intended for the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa and allegedly spent the money on Ghanaian musician Fantana.
The controversy emerged after Gyewu-Appiah, while speaking on Onua FM, made a series of allegations against the minister, claiming that money allocated for the evacuation exercise had been misappropriated. He specifically alleged that the minister had channelled the funds to Fantana, whom he described as Ablakwa’s girlfriend.
In his remarks, Gyewu-Appiah stated: βWhat pains me is that he has given all the money he took to Fantana. Do you know his girl is Fantana?β
The NPP communicator did not stop there. He reportedly went further to describe Ablakwa as a thief and predicted that both the minister and his wife would eventually be jailed over the alleged financial misconduct. He also claimed that the minister’s wife was involved in purchasing tickets for the evacuation exercise.
Additionally, Gyewu-Appiah alleged that Ablakwa had purchased 17 houses for the musician using the money in question. These claims, however, remain allegations and have not been established as facts.
The seriousness of the accusations has now resulted in legal proceedings. According to reports, Ablakwa filed a defamation suit at the High Court in Accra on October 30, 2026, naming both Gyewu-Appiah and Media General Ghana Limited, the media organisation responsible for operating Onua FM and Onua TV, as defendants.
The decision to include Media General in the lawsuit also raises questions about the responsibility of media organisations when broadcasting serious allegations against individuals, particularly public officials. The case places both the person who made the statements and the broadcasting organisation at the centre of the legal dispute.
Interestingly, the controversy has also attracted the attention of Fantana, who previously threatened legal action against Gyewu-Appiah over the allegations linking her to the minister and the supposed diversion of public funds.
The unfolding situation has once again brought the relationship between political communication, media responsibility and freedom of expression into public discussion. As the legal process progresses, the court will provide the appropriate platform for the parties to present their respective positions and evidence.
