NATJOINTS Assures South Africans of Free, Fair, and Secure Local Government Elections

November 3, 2026 dailymirror Johannesburg – The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has reassured South Africans that all essential operational measures are in place to guarantee that the Local Government Elections are held in a free, fair, and safe manner tomorrow, Wednesday, 4 November 2026.

“This evening, we are here to update you on the progress made, address incidents reported during the special voting period, and reaffirm the operational readiness of law enforcement agencies alongside all pertinent government departments to carry out their responsibilities tomorrow on Election Day,” stated NATJOINTS chairperson Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Lieutenant General emphasized that coordination between NATJOINTS and PROVJOINTS is entirely operational, with continuous monitoring of the security landscape across all provinces, districts, and municipalities.

“Our operational frameworks are ready to address any situations that may threaten the integrity of the electoral process or the safety and security of voters, IEC officials, political party representatives, and the general public,” remarked Lieutenant-General Mosikili.

“We want to strongly underline that at midnight tonight (3 November 2026), the official election campaigning period will come to an end, as described in the electoral schedule.

“Therefore, campaigning will not be permissible from tomorrow onwards.

“There must be no form of political persuasion, solicitation, or intimidation of voters at or near polling stations.”

Lieutenant-General Mosikili asserted that every eligible voter deserves the chance to exercise their democratic rights freely, without undue influence, intimidation, or interference from any political party or individual.

“Equally important is the prohibition of protests on Election Day,” she added.

“We would like to clearly communicate that anyone found violating Section 76 of the Municipal Electoral Act 27 of 2000, or any other applicable legal requirement, will face appropriate consequences.

“Our objective as law enforcement agencies is not to obstruct individuals from exercising their constitutional and democratic rights.

“Instead, our deployment aims to ensure that every South African can safely access a voting station and cast their vote free from fear, intimidation, or disruption.”

However, Lieutenant-General Mosikili pointed out that the security situation during the two days of special voting included incidents that required law enforcement attention.

“Of particular concern is the murder of a uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party regional leader in KwaZulu-Natal,” she noted.

“We are confident that the investigative team will pursue all leads to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

“The Political Killings Task Team is also actively engaged in these issues and will provide the necessary investigative assistance.”

Lieutenant-General Mosikili reported that 21 case dockets have been logged since Monday, encompassing murder and various theft incidents related to banners, tents, poster removals, arson, intimidation, and other offenses concerning election materials.

“We also regret to report the unfortunate passing of an IEC presiding officer in Buhrmansdrift, located in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District in North West,” Lieutenant-General Mosikili stated.

“The circumstances surrounding this death are currently under police investigation to ascertain the cause.”

Lieutenant-General Mosikili added: “We take this opportunity to urge all political parties, their leaders, members, and supporters to embrace political tolerance and restraint.”

She stated that police and other law enforcement bodies will take decisive action to uphold law and order; no excuses will be tolerated for criminal behavior.

“We have, therefore, heightened our security measures in accordance with the approved operational plan, focusing particularly on areas identified through intelligence assessments that necessitate enhanced security interventions,” Lieutenant-General Mosikili reiterated.
