Jozi CBD Transformation Nears Completion: Major Changes Coming to Lilian Ngoyi Street
Johannesburg residents and motorists have reason to celebrate as the long-awaited renovation of Lilian Ngoyi Street in the Johannesburg CBD is nearing completion, bringing major improvements to one of the city’s important roads.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) confirmed on Monday, 2 November, that the second phase of the rehabilitation project, covering the section between Ntemi Piliso Street and End Street, has been completed. Only minor finishing work and the installation of street furniture remain.
The massive renovation follows the devastating gas explosion that rocked the area between Harrison and Kruis streets in 2023.
The project was divided into two phases. The first phase, completed in August 2025, focused on repairing the underground tunnel and installing gas, heat and smoke detection systems to improve safety. Water, sewerage, stormwater and electrical infrastructure were also upgraded.
The second phase brought significant changes to the road layout, reducing traffic lanes from five to three. Wider pavements, designated spaces for street traders, bus stops and public toilets were also introduced.
The development has created more than 200 employment opportunities through the Expanded Public Works Programme and involved 27 small, medium and micro enterprises.
Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero said the project was about more than repairing damaged infrastructure, highlighting its importance in improving the inner city’s accessibility, safety and economic activity.
Despite challenges such as bad weather, ageing underground services and sinkholes, the project team managed to push ahead with the rehabilitation.
Motorists and pedestrians have been urged to observe road signs and safety measures while the final work is completed.
