GMet warns of thunderstorms, rainfall across six regions

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned of impending thunderstorms and rainfall across six regions, urging residents to take precautions as rain-bearing clouds move towards the coast.

The affected areas are Greater Accra, Volta, Central, Eastern, Western and Ashanti regions.

In an advisory, the Agency said a band of moderate rain-bearing clouds had been detected over the Gulf of Guinea and was moving towards the coastline.

The weather system is expected to increase cloud cover and trigger thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall of varying intensities in coastal communities.

GMet further indicated that the system could generate additional rain-bearing clouds and thunderstorms over inland and forest areas.

Rainfall activity is expected to begin between 2:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The Agency has cautioned the public against seeking shelter under trees or weak structures during the thunderstorms.

“Motorists are advised to reduce their speed, switch on their headlights and avoid driving through flooded roads or attempting to cross bridges in low-lying areas.

“Residents in flood-prone and riverside communities, particularly around Dambai and along the Oti River, are urged to remain vigilant and pay attention to further weather updates,” the Authority urged.

AFTERNOON FORECAST Sunny weather with periodic cloud cover will prevail across most places in the country during the early hours of the afternoon. Thunderstorms or rain of varying intensities are, however, expected over parts of the coastal, middle and transition sectors from midafternoon into the evening.

GMet has encouraged the public to rely on official information from the Agency for updates on the weather situation.

“For emergencies, residents can contact the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) on 0302 964 884 or 0291 913 077, or call the national emergency number 112,” the notice added.
