Chris Hani’s grandchild Sinoyolo Hani withdraws her support for the ANC

Sinoyolo Hani, the grandchild of late struggle icon Chris Hani, has announced that she will not be voting for the African National Congress for the first time since she began voting. Her statement has attracted attention after being shared alongside a portrait of her grandfather, with the post questioning why other South Africans would continue supporting the ANC when a member of his own family has decided to withdraw her support. The person who shared the post suggests that her decision carries particular significance given Chris Hani’s historical association with the party and the liberation struggle.

One thing the post leaves open is what prompted her decision to withdraw her support, since the post does not set out her reasons or whether she explained them publicly. The post also does not say when she made the announcement or how she intends to vote instead. Those details matter because they would establish the basis of her decision. Without them, the account rests on her statement, and the suggestion that her decision carries particular significance remains the poster’s interpretation.

People reacting to the post discussed her decision, with some saying it showed the ANC had lost support even within families associated with the struggle and others saying her choice was her own and should not be used to judge other voters. Some questioned why her grandfather’s legacy was being invoked, while others said her decision reflected wider disillusionment with the party.

What remains unresolved is whether Sinoyolo Hani has explained her decision further or whether the ANC has responded to her announcement. The post does not establish what motivated her or whether other members of the Hani family share her view. The public is waiting for more information, because her statement has fuelled debate about the party’s support without any confirmation of why she made her choice.
