ANC hands out live chickens to voters a day before the elections

ANC members have sparked reactions after being filmed handing out live chickens to community members during an election campaign ahead of Wednesday’s local government elections. The video shows the party members arriving in an area with chickens loaded at the back of a bakkie and giving residents one live chicken each. The footage has attracted criticism and ridicule on social media, with some users describing the gesture as embarrassing and accusing the ANC of going to unusual lengths to attract support as voters prepare to cast their ballots.

The post is silent on how the handouts were organised or who funded the chickens, since the post does not say whether they came from the party or from individual members. The post also does not say where the handouts took place or how many people received a chicken. Those details matter because they would establish the context of the gesture. Without them, the video shows only the distribution, and the criticism rests on the interpretation of the act rather than on confirmed facts about its purpose.

Some viewers described the gesture as embarrassing, with some saying the ANC was going to unusual lengths to attract support and others expressing disappointment that the party was offering small handouts rather than addressing community concerns. Some said the chickens were a practical gift that would help families, while others said the act looked desperate.

What has not been settled is whether the ANC has commented on the criticism or whether the handouts were part of an official campaign. The post does not establish whether the chickens were offered in exchange for votes or simply given as a community gesture. The public is waiting for more information, because the video has fuelled ridicule of the party without any confirmation of what was behind the handouts.
