“You’re Wasting Your Time” : Gachagua Sends Warning to Ruto’s Camp, Unveils Opposition’s Unity Plan
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed claims of growing divisions within the Opposition, insisting that political leaders, including Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka and the Linda Mwananchi faction, remain committed to uniting behind a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua accused allies of the Kenya Kwanza administration of deliberately spreading claims of disunity in an attempt to weaken the Opposition and undermine its efforts to build a formidable political alliance ahead of the elections.
Speaking on Tuesday, November 3, while hosting a delegation at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader maintained that opposition leaders had already agreed on the need to field one presidential candidate.
He dismissed attempts to portray disagreements among opposition politicians as evidence of an impending political fallout, warning those spreading such claims that their efforts would not succeed.
“Mnajaribu kutukosanisha, mnajaribu kugawa Mlima, kupiganisha viongozi. You’re wasting your time,” Gachagua said.
His remarks come amid growing public debate over the future of the Opposition, with competing presidential ambitions and disagreements over the proposed coalition structure raising questions about whether the leaders can maintain a united front.
However, Gachagua maintained that differences among individual politicians would not prevent them from reaching an agreement on a common presidential candidate.
The former Deputy President has repeatedly indicated his willingness to support Kalonzo or Linda Mwananchi leader Edwin Sifuna should either emerge as the most suitable candidate to challenge Ruto.
At the October 30 launch of the Linda Mwananchi Party, Gachagua signalled that he was prepared to set aside his presidential ambitions if another opposition leader secured the coalition’s ticket.
Kalonzo also expressed support for the idea of a united opposition, declaring that he would back Sifuna if the coalition settled on him as its presidential candidate.
Nevertheless, the unity question has continued to attract criticism from other opposition figures. Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i recently warned that Gachagua’s approach to coalition-building risked alienating other political leaders and creating further divisions.
Despite the competing interests, Gachagua insists that the Opposition’s priority remains defeating Ruto in 2027 rather than allowing disagreements over individual ambitions to fracture the alliance.
